I’m a working mom, like so many today, and realized that there was a definite lack of quality time for kids in the kitchen.  The time-poor society, in which we now live, has meant that a whole generation of children are growing up without experiencing the joy of a meal prepared and shared. kctcara09

As a working Personal Chef, it seemed only natural that I would attempt to empower my own children in the kitchen.  Inspired by their spontaneous delight, I decided to run what was intended to be a one-off holiday program in October 2006.  Three years later and it has turned into a must-have class during the holidays!

Over 1000 young home-cooks and aspiring chefs have discovered the magic at the end of their fingertips!

The children range in age from 3 ½ to 8 years old.  The older ones tend to take on a mentoring role, it’s brilliant to see.  It really is a communal experience, and although there is a range in skills, they are all working towards the same goal.  I have seen children eat a new food because they see other children waxing lyrical about the taste...even my kids surprise me with what they are willing to try in the company of others.

During each class there is an informal discussion about favourite types of food.  It’s amazing how one voice will inspire others.  Before you know it they all want to share food combinations that you wouldn’t necessarily think of.

Kids Cooking Time!, has proven to be a truly rewarding experience, and not just for the children, but their extended family as well.  Some mums feel as though the time they are unable to give their kids in the kitchen is made up for tenfold through just one class.  They too become more inclined to spend just a little bit of time in the kitchen with their children.  Food is an obvious necessity, but as a parent it’s our job to show them that it is also a celebration!
